14 At Last and the 2012 Tree Hunt

Ivy and Alaina turned 14 years old today, enjoyed semester finals at school, did a little Christmas shopping at Stillwater Milling, and then helped with the tree hunt before dark (Alaina's turn to saw but Kale helped).  Happy Birthday!

Rogers County Fair Fun

The girls and I took three horses to the county fair last weekend.  After weeks of treating Sunny and Pico for some lameness issues, Sunny was sound enough to show but (alas) not so for Pico.  So, we took Sister, Sunny, and Splash.  Ivy showed Sister in Halter and Showmanship and then Splash in Western classes.  Alaina showed Sunny in Halter, Showmanship, English (except Jumping), Western includingTrail and used Sister for Cross Bars.  I showed Splash in Halter, Showmanship, English (except jumping) and Western including Trail.

Sunny and Alaina were pretty good considering Sunny has not been riden since early August - they were Reserve Champion Palomino Halter Geldings/Stallions.  Ivy did very well with Sister and Splash although she didn't make the top 4 placings - so no money.  Splash was pretty good for me after some summer training with Dawn D Performance Horses.  We were Reserve Champion Appaloosa Geldings/Stallions as well as First in Adult Trail.  Very exciting.

The girls also entered bread, wood burning, and (Ivy only) photography in the 4-H division.  They placed in all their classes but no first placings which would have gone on to the Tulsa State Fair.  The county fair had a small carnival this year so the girls learned about carnival economics.  In otherwords, how to buy small toys for lots of money.  I think we need to practice that cover the dot game before we hand over cash again.  Next Saturday we will go compete at the Tulsa State Fair 4-H/FFA horse show now held a week before the midway opens.  Drop by and say hi.

School Starts Already!

Who's idea was starting school on the 9th of August?  Rogers County!  So the girls will start 8th grade this week.  They are already practicing volleyball and we picked up schedules LAST WEEK.

Fires broke out in several places west of Tulsa resulting in ash fall in Owasso and Claremore and a strange pink sun with ominous smoke patterns.  Very scary.

World Travelers visit the Wild O Ranch

The girls and I spent a few days in Shawnee for the 2012 4-H State Horse Show last weekend followed by a work shift with our Green Country Chapter of ODS helping with the Green Country Classic Dressage Show at the Claremore Expo on Sunday afternoon.  Steve recieved solitary spendor for most of his father's day but we had fun visitors Sunday evening when Brandon and Liz visited the Wild O Ranch.  We snacked on fresh salsa and refrigerator pickles with a quick pony ride out back before a dinner of Car-Nee-Tahs.  Yum.  I think the strawberry daquiries made the riders more relaxed.

Liz and Brandon are planning a 500 mile hike from Denver to Durango and I look forward to seeing photos and hearing all about their adventures when they finish later this summer. Good luck hikers!

In Case You Missed It

I was hoping for clear skies to get a good view of today's solar eclipse but had clouds up until the beginning. We had about 45 minutes or so of good viewing before some low clouds obscured the view. Still,it was pretty cool! Shot these with a Canon dslr attached to a 6 inch telescope with a solar filter. Hoping to get some photos and video of Venus transit on June 5th....music here :"Green Onions" by Booker-T & the MGs.

A Successful Tick Hunt or Happy Mother's Day Hike

Mother’s Day in Oklahoma was a beautiful day and I wanted to hike at Skull Hollow - Steve and the girls were game.  So, sunscreen and bug spay applied and we were off.
We took the loop along the lakeside and saw a little wild life along the way – two snakes (one very large Black Snake and a tiny little Green snake), a centipede, trapping spider, water turtle, butterflies, and birds. It appears that 90% of the greenery is poison ivy, but the trail is clear. We did collect more than enough TICKS! Alaina had dozens of them in her shoes, socks, all over her jeans and a couple of them were already eating a mid-day snack before we finished our walk.  Ivy and Steve had some as well.

Yikes, retreat is the better part of valor so we went home. Guess that lovely mild winter means a big year for ticks.  Ugh.

It was still a lovely evening for a nice dinner followed by my new favorite dessert:  REAL Key Lime Pie with Strawberries and Whipped Cream.  Yum.
Happy Mother's Day to all you Mom's out there.

Ready in 5 minutes

Eschewing makeup as always (lip balm doesn't count) and letting her hair fall where it may, Kiah had time to chat and pass time with Donna and I before Prom. Her date, while late, was charming and sweet and even made the effort to match Kiah's dress with his tie!

Meanwhile, at the Center of the Solar System

NASA's solar orbiter captured an enormous eruption from the sun today, Space.com reports.
The "beautiful prominence eruption" occurred at 1:45 p.m. ET and was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Although visually spectacular, the resulting solar flare registered only in the middle of the intensity scale (M1.7 class).
No danger to Earth, however. The burst of super-hot plasma, called a coronal mass ejection, went in another direction. But the sun is in an active stage of its 11-year cycle, which is expected to peak next year.(copied from USA Today website)
This actually occurred a couple days ago.

Hoppy - Happy Easter!

The Easter Bunny Challange took about an hour and a half - that pesky rabbit hid green eggs in green grass, red eggs on red trucks, blue eggs on/in blue items as well as in several very evil locations.  But candy will be sweet and deviled eggs will be yummy.

Oh - pace yourself with the chocolate.
