Funny, lem, both girls were having shin splint issues. Cathy got them some compression socks. Ivy wears them, Alaina doesn't. Their legs are feeling better but I think Ivy likes them for the look.
I was hoping to see the girls sometime this season at a meet. I suppose thier season is now over as most Jr. High teams have now packed them in. As you may know Amy has made a comeback of sorts after having played soccer the past two seasons. Her Regional meet is at Oologah on the 28th where she has a good chance to advance to State in the 1600m run by finishing in the top 3. Her best time is 6:00 flat which puts her in a tie for third fastest in this Region and 13th in the State (class 4-A).
Comments from Gwen on the shin splints (sorry took so long, I forgot to post):
- It can be a serious condition which lead to inflammation of the bone sheath and eventually a stress fracture (Gwen ended up cracking her tibialis anterior), in an attempt to ignore her shin splints during her marathon training. This kept her off her feet for six weeks while it healed. Good idea to pick up some swimming during that time (silver lining?).
- An immediate treatment, good old R-I-C-E (Rest, Ice bags or pads with ace bandage (no more than 20 mins per session) Compression sox work ok, Elevation) will help as a general treatment
- Ice massage, in addition to general icing can help, by filling up bathroom style dixie cups and freezing them and then peeling the cup back to expose the ice and rub it directly to the areas most effective.
- Without an MRI or a bone scan they can't tell you much preemptively about how bad the shin splints are. An Xray will only tell you if your bone is cracked, and the crack will only show up on the Xray after its already healing after several weeks of mending.
- Long term you will need to focus on strengthen your T.A. muscles to protect those bones. Once the pain is gone, using a resistance band daily will build the muscle up and protect those bones Shin Splint Strengthening Exercises
- Calf sleeves and/or compression sox help to keep the muscle from flopping around, however ultimately you'll have to build the muscles up around the bone.
Don't forget biking as an alternative while you heal! 8-)
Thanks for all the info. We pretty much used the RICE formula as much as was feasible. I think they could have pretty much avoided the problem with a slow build-up but they just hit the track running at the beginning of the season so had no real chance to get in runniong shape. They have conference meet in Tahlequah the 28th. Glad to hear Amy's doing so well. Good Luck Saturday!
woow, i love the concentration they have. and i'm imagining all the other teams buzzing over the fabulous orban twins :) way to go girls and good luck saturday

great showing!
Excellent! How high have you jumped this season?
These jumps were both personal bests.
the dark socks made the difference- A gift (from Cathy)?

We need a picture post of Amy also!
Woo Hoo!! Awesome!!
Loved to watch! Congrats girls!
Way cool! Echoing MO's comment, can't help but think how intimidating "those tall, blonde twins from Claremore" must be to opponents.
they are putting me to shame.. love you girls!
