Holiday Glow

Thanks to a nice warm-up after Thanksgiving, I've managed to get some lights up outside. Next on the list, get decorations out of attic. Christmas shopping getting done on the web. Hopefully we'll get a tree this weekend. Soon we'll be baking cookies etc. Christmas better hurry 'cause the twins are beginning to vibrate!

Over the River

...and through the woods to grandad's house we go. Looking forward to a day of thanks all too short but rewarding just the same. We'll bring rolls from Jan's blue-ribbon recipe, cheesy cauliflower, Cathy's cranberry relish, pecan and pumpkin pie and a flourless chocolate cake m-m-m!
Hope everyone's day is joyful, restful and safe. GO PACK!

Nobody here but us turkeys...

By some unknown cosmic circumstances, I have found myself in possession of three turkeys - the eating kind. Which is funny because I don't eat turkey. So one is promised to Brenda for Christmastime. The other I have tried, unsuccessfully, to give to a soup kitchen here in town - but they're all turkeyed up for the holidays (I guess that's a good thing). The third one I am going to attempt to cook for my fellow. This will be my first turkey and, in fact, the first anything I've had to cook using a syringe. Working at a daily newspaper is not that charitable when it comes to holidays, so I only have one Tofurkey Day off - hopefully I'll get to have a Latesgiving with my folks this weekend. But for now, I have my Grand Turkey Experiment to keep me busy. Coworkers have suggested their favorite ways of cooking the bird ("deep fry it!" "inject it with Cajun seasoning!"). As long as I don't end up with a Clark Griswold bird, that will be fine. And just in case, I'll have some pasta on standby.

The only real turkey this week will be MIZZOU after KU roasts them up at Arrowhead! .. some Misery-ans have taken to wearing a particularly idiotic shirt that depicts the pre-Civil War sacking and burning of Lawrence, which is essentially advertising "look what my pro-slavery yokel kin did to yer abolitionist capital, hyuk hyuk." To be fair, most Mizzou fans would steer clear of such nonsense .. but they'll be serving alcohol at Arrowhead, so I'm glad to stay home.

Be very, very careful driving, everyone, wherever your travels take you this week.

The Inclination & the Time

Had the crusts ready to bake and decided we hade to document. Ivy took the pix.
Nothing healthy here except for cooked tomatoes and partial whole wheat flour. Of course the soul needs food too! Cathy likes hers w/ garlic-butter sauce, feta cheese & grilled chicken. Alaina, cheese; pepperoni for Ivy & me, and any meat we've got for Kale.

Solitary Traveler

Came across a Monarch caterpillar a couple weeks ago in near freezing temps a week after other Monarchs had passed through. Butterfly emerged today and almost immediately
it was attacked by a preying mantis hiding in a house plant. Rescued with no apparent harm done. Properly fed and tagged he was released to the elements (20-25 mph S wind).
Chances for reaching Mexico I'm sure are slim but better than none.
At what point do we say 'hands off, let Mother Nature take her course'? If a butterfly beats it's wings in Oklahoma does a typhoon blow up in Okinawa?
Good luck little guy.

Oklahoma Autumn

The season is providing a subtle change for a change, this year in Oklahoma. Walked to the neighborhood park and chased leaves. Breezes drift through open windows around the house, bringing in the odor of decaying summer vegetation. Filtered light recalls days gone by and foreshadow the winter to come.
Anybody still getting tomatoes?

Current project

Paul is beginning to feel the first pangs of doubt & indecision with his creations. I can't help but feel guilty. He compares his work to published authors, recognized artists and employed craftsmen. The days of making stuff for the joy of making stuff are fading. Frustration and angxt lie ahead.
I mention this only as a backdrop to my attempts to recover childlike notions of what's "good". I may never be free of inhibitions while I work( a worthy goal in all phases of anyones life), but even in the attempt, the opportunity for discovery and growth unfold.
The kids return this afternoon and I can take a break from fretting over meaningless contemplations and get back to being "Dad" and a well meaning but struggling carpenter.
The attached photo is of an acrylic piece, tentatively named "Come Out To Play".

Lots of candy..

Hope you all had a good one! We had to run to the store and get supplies for a ping pong ball launcher project for nick that is DUE FRIDAY - we thought it was NEXT week. So we flew thru the neighborhood of a friend of mine...our neighborhood was so dead(no pun) it was kind of creepy. So Nick worked on the report part when we got back. Was thinking of the twins and wondering if they were the same hump back and hook hand as the party.
