Just a Taste

We haven't grown strawberries in over 20 years and then only in an old half barrel. Since I've expanded our garden area we thought it might be worth a try. Raised bed, 8X16 ft, 36 locally grown plants of 2 varieties. Not expecting a real crop this year but if we keep the weeds out and the soil watered we should have some to share next year. Only 2-3 pints for us this year and a handful or two for the birds.

Yummmmm the taste of summer!! yesterday I saw fruit plants at the local nursery and thought how wonderful it would be to grow one's own fruit. Do you still have blackberries?

Well, we still have blackberry brambles all over the place, and last year we had a pretty good crop. However, it appears as if the "Big Freeze" of '11 may have impacted the plants. Though they had plenty of blossoms and we had a reasonably wet spring there are very few berries. Hopefully they'll be back next year.
