Time Capsule
Ten years ago while hoarding bottled water, toilet paper and other essentials to survive the millennium bug we also stowed various items in a time capsule to be opened at the end of the decade. Most everyone who was in attendance at our tree burning/new years party that year placed something in the capsule.
We'll open the container this weekend and take a look back. I'll post more info about what's inside in a few days. If anybody wants to drop by and take a look just come on by.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Rum Balls
Step one
- buy RUM
- Bacardi 151
The original recipe is the Bourbon Ball recipe in the Joy of Cooking. If you use the cookbook version, the dough is always to dry.
So my rule of thumb is -
add more rum.

The original recipe is the Bourbon Ball recipe in the Joy of Cooking. If you use the cookbook version, the dough is always to dry.
So my rule of thumb is -
add more rum.
- 2 T cocoa
- 1 c powdered sugar - sift cocoa and sugar together in a large bowl
- 1/4 to 1/2 c rum ( sometimes I add a little Triple Sec)
- 4 T light Karo - mix in 1 c measure (you may need more of this mixture if the dough is to dry)
- 2 1/2 c vanilla wafer crumbs - that's about 1 box vanilla wafers ground up in the food processor (the original recipe allows for ginger snaps as an option - might be good)
- 1 c chopped pecans
- Add crumbs and nuts together with the cocoa and sugar in the large bowl.
- Add liquid and mix.
- If crumbly, make more rum/Karo mix and add a little at at time.
- The dough should be a bit sticky since the cookie crumbs soak up liquid as they sit.
- Form into bite sized balls and roll in granulated sugar and store in air tight container until time to serve.
These are very strong - use regular rum if you want milder Rum Balls.
Do not eat and drive.

The Latest OU Graduate
I finished all my coursework and passed my comprehensive exams, so I now have a Master's degree in Museum Studies! It is good to be finished after 3 years of studying online courses and travelling and working at the same time. Today is commencement ceremonies in Norman, but I am having much more fun in Colorado enjoying my grandbaby Orin.

Thanksgiving Photos
Ah another Thanksgiving meal to remember - how amazing that so many great cooks belong to one family. Amazing and Lucky. The kitchen table couldn't hold all the dishes and deserts were stashed on the back porch. Both turkey and ham, 'taters, stuffing (2 kinds), gravey, green beans, colliflower, curry, cherry chutney, pink fluff, rolls, cranberries (3 kinds), sqash casserole, sweet taters - the list goes on. Pies - pumpkin, cherry, pecan, apple - peanutbutter/chocolate bars, cheese cake, and.... WOW, what a feast.
And beautiful weather so the feasters could spill outdoors for football, swinging, and hanging around and recovery.
See all the photos at the link on the title to this post. xxxooo c

Turn the Page
Rolling through November without a decent freeze yet recorded. The trees know and so do the birds, fall is here and the cold wind of winter is on it's way. Meanwhile we'll enjoy the 60's & 70's while we can!

Fall Visitor
This morning we saw a pair of pileated woodpeckers (aka "stump-busters") fluttering and picking around the trees between our house and the river. They are big and beautiful, and it was great to see them. They might have been just passing through, as we haven't seen them all year, but we will be watching in case they decide to stay for awhile. Do you ever see these birds in Oklahoma?

Fall Fun
We have had to much fun the last couple of weeks. The girls had 4 opportunities to dress up - 2 with the horses. The girls opted to go to a party with some school friends rather than trick or treating.
Alaina was an Arab Sheik on the Arabian steed - she had to use Sunny for the dressage costume class but got to ride Diez at the 4H fun show. That really made her day since Diez has been on injured reserve.
Ivy and Pico were the Elf and her Reindeer (Moose antlers?). At times poor Pico looked embarassed with his get-up although he spooked at the bridle when he first saw it and ran around the yard.
My riding friend Tammy brought her owl to the Halloween bash to add ambiance. Now that the halloween fun is over, the girls are trying to jump the gun and start singing Xmas carols early. NOT allowed!

Sunny Sunday
and the girls and I played with the horses. Ivy wanted to work Sister and rode Splash and Pico - she is ready to jump again as soon as her cast comes off. Alaina is happy to ride Diez at a walk for a little R&R since she has been recovering from laminitis and founder for the last few months but she also worked Sunny a little too. Then, for the best part, the girls and Steve set up the Halloween decorations - very scary!

Time
The girls and I had a horsey day today - lessons with Patty. Alaina worked Sunny on canter leads and getting through a gate - Ivy worked Pico on transitions and jumping.
Kathleen O went with me to Totem Pole Park yesterday and I remembered a trip there long ago. We miss you Jaime.

Fun in the Arenas
The girls had fun at the Tulsa State Fair horse show on Sat. and won a few ribbons. Mostly, they enjoyed hanging out with their horsey friends.
At home on Sunday, Alaina rode Diez for the first time since she got Laminitis and foundered in July. Diez has been on stall rest and has a new diet without green grass. Alaina only rode about 15 min. at the walk only. Diez seemded to enjoy the attention.
Ivy mostly played with Jet the silly pet - they are 2 peas in a pod...
