Fall Visitor

This morning we saw a pair of pileated woodpeckers (aka "stump-busters") fluttering and picking around the trees between our house and the river. They are big and beautiful, and it was great to see them. They might have been just passing through, as we haven't seen them all year, but we will be watching in case they decide to stay for awhile. Do you ever see these birds in Oklahoma?

Nice sighting! Is that your own photo? These birds are supposedly numerous throughout most of central US to east coast. I've only seen one on deep-woods hike in Ouchitas.and only fleeting then.

Photo not ours. I copied it from Wunderground weather website. But they looked just like that!!!

We used to catch glimpses of them in the woods around our place near Bristow. Lots of dead oak trees out there, riddled with years of woodpecker's work.
